Arnt Fiane, professor of medicine at the University of Oslo, confirmed that the 52-year-old will stay hospitalized for several weeks to allow close monitoring for any possible complications.
Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has successfully received a lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet, according to an announcement from the Royal Palace.

Diagnosed in 2018 with a rare type of pulmonary fibrosis, Mette-Marit, 52, suffers from a disease that results in lung tissue scarring and impaired breathing.
“I have faced intermittent health issues over several years, and now the causes behind them are clearer,» Mette-Marit noted at that time, indicating that this condition might occasionally influence her professional commitments.
Arnt Fiane, a cardiothoracic surgeon and professor at the University of Oslo, expressed satisfaction with the transplant’s progress and stated that Mette-Marit is expected to remain under hospital care for a number of weeks.
This period will enable healthcare professionals to adjust treatments if necessary, manage any complications that arise, and support the recovery process, he explained.
«The Crown Prince and Crown Princess extend their heartfelt thanks for the many warm and supportive messages received, which hold great significance for them during this difficult period,» the palace stated in a press release issued Wednesday.
This update follows shortly after the verdict sentencing Mette-Marit’s eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby, to four years imprisonment after convictions for two counts of rape along with other offenses.
Though not an official member of the royal household, Høiby was acquitted on two additional rape charges but found guilty of domestic violence against a former partner and several other crimes.
