A man held a supermarket cashier hostage for approximately 11 hours and 20 minutes. Witnesses report that upon entering the store at around 10 p.m. on Friday, he threatened the woman with a knife and detained her.

German news agency dpa noted that the supermarket remained sealed off for multiple hours as authorities managed the incident.

Special police units (SEK) were stationed outside the premises, while ambulances, fire personnel, and numerous police cars awaited nearby. Earlier in the day, officers used a ladder to peer inside the supermarket.

Contact between negotiators and the hostage-taker was maintained during the standoff. It is not yet determined whether the suspect had any prior relationship with the hostage.

Employees present inside the supermarket at the onset of the event managed to leave unharmed and were supported by emergency medical teams.

One worker told Bild: «The assailant was at the cashier, refusing to place items on the conveyor, then suddenly brandished a knife.»
