On Truth Social, Trump posted: «Following the successful election of Poland’s current President, Karol Nawrocki, whose endorsement I proudly supported, and considering our strong relations, I am glad to reveal that the United States will send 5,000 more troops to Poland.»
This statement was released only two days after US Vice President J.D. Vance informed reporters that the scheduled deployment of US forces to the Eastern European country had been postponed.
Recently, the US has been reassessing its military footprint in Europe amid growing rumors that the Trump administration could scale down American troop presence on the continent.
In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed gratitude towards Trump for his «friendship» in a post on X, pledging to maintain vigilance over the Polish-American alliance, describing it as «a crucial foundation of security for every Polish household and all of Europe.»
He emphasized, “Protecting Poland and its citizens remains my highest priority.”
Trump met with Nawrocki, who assumed office in mid-2025, at the White House last September, where the US leader mentioned the potential expansion of the American military presence in Poland.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz commented on X that Trump’s move to send additional troops «reinforces the strength of Polish-American relations» and affirms that «Poland stands as a steadfast and exemplary ally.»
He added, «It is positive that we collaborate closely on the essential matters concerning our Homeland’s security. This responsibility translates into tangible results.»
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed Trump’s announcement on Friday, just before an alliance foreign ministers’ meeting in Sweden, noting that NATO «military commanders are thoroughly reviewing all specifics».
Prior to a cabinet session on Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted that the government is «actively seeking information and aiming to influence decisions made by our American partners”.
“Our American allies need to grasp the critical importance of tight and well-coordinated cooperation for the security of Poland, Europe, the United States, and the global order, including the stationing of American forces in Poland,” stated Tusk.
Currently, approximately 10,000 US military personnel are based in Poland.
