Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority confirmed that «no adverse conditions have been reported so far,» while conducting an «on-site evaluation.»

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in eastern Turkey on Saturday, as reported by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The tremor occurred near the Battalgazi district of Malatya province at approximately 6:20 a.m. local time, with its effects felt across Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli, and Şanlıurfa provinces, AFAD indicated.

The agency added that «there are no reports of negative incidents at this time,» and that an «on-site assessment» is in progress.

AFAD also noted that Turkey, ranking among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, witnesses at least one tremor of magnitude 5.0 or higher annually.

Throughout its history, Turkey has suffered several devastating earthquakes, including the 1939 Erzincan quake that caused nearly 33,000 deaths, and the 1999 İzmit earthquake with about 17,000 casualties.

In 2023, two major seismic events struck Kahramanmaraş province in southern Turkey, resulting in an estimated death toll exceeding 53,000. The economic damage from these quakes is estimated to have reached nearly 10% of Turkey’s GDP that year.
