Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they detained a white British man after the 78-year-old former Conservative MP was discovered deceased at her residence with severe injuries on Thursday.

Authorities clarified that there is no indication of terrorism or political motives involved in the case.

Earlier on Friday, officials announced a murder inquiry was initiated into Widdecombe’s death, following reports that she had “sustained serious injuries” when found at her home in Haytor, near the boundary of Dartmoor National Park.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the circumstances of her passing as “deeply troubling.”

After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe gained popularity by participating in reality TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

She later became affiliated with the Brexit Party and acted as a spokesperson for the anti-immigration party Reform UK.

Her tenure in the House of Commons spanned from 1987 to 2010, during which she was recognized for her socially conservative positions, including opposition to abortion rights and LGBTQ+ rights expansion.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson described her as “a heroic Brexiteer and an exceptional orator capable of inspiring Tory audiences to such excitement that following her was a formidable challenge.”

The management firm representing her post-politics noted that her career and life were guided by firm Christian principles and dedication to public service.

“She thrived on the intensity of political debate and, even 16 years after departing Parliament, remained actively engaged with Reform UK, providing clear perspectives on current issues,” stated Cloud9 Management.

“As Ann once expressed… ‘we get one chance in this life, just one. Life isn’t a rehearsal; you take the opportunities you want and pursue them—that’s my approach’.”
