An overnight Russian assault on Ukraine’s Kyiv region struck four districts, inflicting damage on homes, schools, businesses, and vital infrastructure, according to regional officials. The attack resulted in at least four fatalities and left at least 15 injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that a combined Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv’s region overnight caused the deaths of at least four individuals and injured 15 others.

Regional administration head Mykola Kalashnyk reported that three of the injured remain in serious condition, with two undergoing surgical procedures. The assault affected four districts, damaging housing, educational centers, enterprises, and essential infrastructure, Kalashnyk stated in a social media update, noting he had «information about 30 damaged locations».

Zelenskyy indicated that the primary objective of the overnight strikes was «the energy infrastructure of the Kyiv region.» He detailed that Russia deployed 430 drones and 68 missiles; air defenses successfully intercepted 402 drones and all 68 missiles.

Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing in the Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv regions, Zelenskyy added.

According to Russia’s Defence Ministry on Saturday, the nocturnal strikes targeted energy and industrial sites supporting Ukraine’s military, as well as military airbases.

Negotiations falter amid Middle East conflict

The attacks occurred days following the US postponement of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine planned for this week, citing the conflict in the Middle East as the cause.

Russia, already benefiting from higher global energy prices, might anticipate that the US-Israeli conflict with Iran would divert global attention from Ukraine and drain Western military reserves.

On Saturday, Zelenskyy urged Kyiv’s Western allies to devote “complete focus” to increasing the production of air defense missiles.

“Russia intends to leverage the Middle East war to inflict greater devastation in Europe and Ukraine,» he stated via social media.

“It is crucial to accurately gauge the severity of the threat and respond appropriately. Specifically: in Europe, there is an urgent requirement to expand the production of air defense missiles—especially those effective against ballistic threats—and to enhance all other necessary systems to safeguard lives,” he emphasized.

Zelenskyy also voiced worries that the temporary relaxation of US sanctions on Russian oil might provide Moscow with additional funds to support its military actions.

“This singular easing by the US could supply Russia with nearly $10 billion to fund the conflict,” Zelenskyy stated. “This situation certainly does not promote peace.”

Kyiv is also awaiting US approval for a substantial drone manufacturing agreement proposed last year, as nations rush to upgrade their air defense systems following revelations of vulnerabilities in the wake of the Iran conflict.

Ukrainian drones reportedly strike Russian oil refinery and port

During the night leading into Saturday, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil refinery and port in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, according to local Russian officials.

Krasnodar authorities reported that three people were injured in a strike on Port Kavkaz, situated opposite Crimea and used for shipping liquefied natural gas and grain. Damage occurred to a service vessel and pier infrastructure, as stated in a social media update. One person was later hospitalized, officials added.

Falling drone debris sparked a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery within the region, local authorities informed. No injuries were reported, though the refinery suffered damage attributed to drone debris fragments.

Russia’s Defence Ministry announced that air defenses «intercepted and destroyed» 87 Ukrainian drones overnight in various regions.

Earlier this week, both Russian and Ukrainian officials asserted battlefield advances: Ukraine claimed it had pushed back Moscow’s forces at multiple frontline locations, while the Kremlin maintained progress in its invasion of its neighbor.

Russia’s full-scale invasion has ignited the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, displacing millions and causing hundreds of thousands of military and civilian casualties on both sides.
