Greece is implementing a novel community-based healthcare model that addresses persistent obstacles in medical service availability.
Located in Giannouli, near Larissa, the Local Health Unit (TOMY) is transforming the care options for at-risk populations. Individuals such as Vasiliki Moustaka, who experiences severe hypoglycemia, depend on this facility for comprehensive medical treatment and psychological support.
With medical professionals including Dr. Zoi Papanikolaou on staff, TOMY alleviates the strain on hospitals by providing primary healthcare, making referrals, and delivering mental health services.
Funded by an allocation of €202.5 million from the European Social Fund+, the 127 TOMY centers across Greece strive to lessen health disparities—a priority acknowledged by experts as crucial to establishing equitable, universal healthcare within the European Union.
