Gáspár Orbán, son of Hungary’s departing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has officially left the Hungarian Defence Forces, local press reports indicate.

Sources from 444.hu confirmed that Orbán, who held the rank of captain, filed his demobilization request prior to the parliamentary elections on 12 April, in which his father’s Fidesz party suffered a significant defeat to the opposition.

Born in 1992, Gáspár Orbán studied law and initially pursued a football career, playing as a midfielder for Videoton FC Fehérvár and Puskás Akadémia FC before establishing a Christian youth movement named Felház.

He pledged his allegiance to the Hungarian Defence Forces in 2019 and was dispatched in 2020 to complete a nine-month course at the elite Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK.

Captain Szilveszter Pálinkás, a fellow Hungarian officer from the same course, told the telex news outlet that he had been summoned by the Chief of General Staff, who said, «I need to take care of him, ensure he is fed and watered, and guarantee he completes this academy; if not, we risk losing our jobs.»

A Hungarian military initiative in Chad, focused on limiting migrant movements into Europe, was reportedly proposed by Orbán, who allegedly shared with a Sandhurst colleague that he received a “divine inspiration” to aid African Christians.

In 2024, Hungary declared it would deploy approximately 200 troops to Chad to provide training and assist with counter-terrorism efforts.

This mission drew attention in Hungary, partly because the country had minimal prior relations with Chad, and the pledged $200 million (€170 million) aid was considered a substantial commitment from one of Europe’s less affluent nations.

Captain Pálinkás stated that the military campaign in Chad was orchestrated by Gáspár Orbán, then serving as a lieutenant-general, and he anticipated casualty rates around 50%.

Both Orbán and Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky denied this allegation, asserting that the Chad mission had not taken place, despite parliamentary approval.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also refuted the accusations, noting that lieutenants within the Hungarian Defence Forces are not authorized to plan military operations.
