Trump has consistently backed right-wing candidates with similar views during election campaigns. Orbán faces his toughest race yet as the opposition Tisza Party, led by young conservative Péter Magyar, leads in voter preference polls.
US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Truth Social ahead of a crucial election in April, where Orbán risks losing power.
Orbán has held office in Hungary since 2010, enjoying a supermajority, yet recent polls position Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party ahead, challenging the premier’s dominance seriously.
Trump has a record of actively supporting right-wing conservative allies abroad, including Japan’s Sanae Takaichi and Argentina’s Javier Milei, both of whom secured victories.
The controversial US National Security Strategy indicates that Washington depends on nationalist, far-right groups in Europe to counteract what it describes as a «civilizational decline» on the continent.
«I proudly supported Viktor in the 2022 elections, and I am honored to do so again,» Trump stated on Thursday.
Trump described Orbán as a genuine friend, a determined fighter, and a winner, commending his stringent stance on illegal immigration.
In January, Trump sent Orbán a letter hinting at a possible visit to Hungary before the elections, though no specific date was announced.
Earlier this week, Orbán expressed his intent to invite Trump to Hungary, also mentioning that a proposed Budapest summit involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine remains under consideration.
«There is a clear agreement between me, the American president, and the Russian president, stating that if progress is achieved and a peace summit occurs, it will take place in Budapest,» Orbán explained.
According to the 21 Research Center pollster, the Tisza Party leads with 35% support, while the incumbent Fidesz-KDNP coalition holds 28%.
The election is scheduled for April 12.
