In a discussion on Euronews’ main morning program Europe Today, former US diplomat Wendy Sherman commended the ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the US-Iran conflict, while alerting that Iran seems to hold a stronger position.
Wendy Sherman, ex-U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, states that Tehran has come out of the conflict in a significantly more advantageous stance compared to the U.S., which initiated hostilities on 28 February through US–Israeli airstrikes directed at Iranian military and governmental facilities, resulting in the elimination of Iranian officials including its leader Ali Khamenei.

In her conversation with Euronews, the experienced diplomat who headed the delegation responsible for the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran expressed cautious optimism about the current dialogues between Washington and Tehran, noting, however, substantial doubts linger regarding any future accord.
“The reality of the situation is unclear,” she explained. “The United States communicates one position, while Iran presents a contrasting stance.”
Sherman criticized the proposed framework deal related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting it seems to offer Iran “considerable concessions for relatively little in return.”
Emphasizing the necessity of verification, she stated that inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency must resume on-site inspections. “Negotiations cannot progress without understanding the facts,” she emphasized. At present, the U.S. and Iran dispute whether Tehran consented to inspecting its nuclear facilities.
For Sherman, this conflict highlights the imperative of diplomatic engagement. “Diplomacy is essential. Military measures will not resolve the issue.”
She also cautioned that Iran’s influence might expand in Lebanon and surrounding regions, adding complexity to broader efforts aimed at achieving stability.
