The Ministry of Defence of Lithuania reported that an air raid alert was activated and NATO Baltic Air Policing deployed after a suspected drone was spotted approaching from Belarus near the border area.
"Immediately take shelter in a secure location, look after those close to you, and wait for further instructions," a message sent to residents in the capital city stated.
The air raid alert has now been canceled.
On Wednesday morning, Latvia also issued a warning to inhabitants in the eastern regions of Ludza, Krāslava, and Rēzekne, citing a "potential threat" to its airspace.
"Seek refuge indoors, close all windows and doors — adhere to the two-wall rule," the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) stated in an announcement. "If a low-flying, suspicious, or hazardous object is observed, avoid approaching it and dial 112."
Later, the NBS confirmed that the threat had ended.
This follows an incident on Tuesday when a Romanian F-16 fighter jet intercepted and destroyed a stray Ukrainian drone over Estonia.
After the event, Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna remarked that the drone interception operation demonstrated the effectiveness of NATO’s defensive systems.
"Romanian F-16s responded promptly from Šiauliai, showcasing Allied unity and readiness to protect every part of NATO territory," he posted on X.
