The Italian government appears to have altered its stance towards the United States and Israel following Trump’s criticisms of Pope Leo XIV and the Netanyahu administration’s harsh measures against Flotilla activists. Is this a genuine shift or merely superficial?
In this special edition recorded at the Imperial Fora in Rome, Claudio Borghi, senator representing the League, and Arturo Scotto, an Italian Parliament member from the Democratic Party (PD), join the discussion.

The debate centers on an alleged alteration in the foreign policy pursued by Giorgia Meloni’s administration. Over recent months, tensions have escalated with the United States and Israel — traditionally strong allies of Rome, both led by figures politically aligned with the Italian prime minister.
The call for European sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, triggered by a disturbing video showing him mocking and insulting handcuffed activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, represents the peak of growing tensions with Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, already criticized for its operations in Lebanon.
Simultaneously, Meloni seems to have lost favor with Donald Trump after defending Pope Leo XIV, labeling the U.S. president’s attacks on the pontiff as “unacceptable.” Importantly, she disregarded Trump’s request for military action against Iran aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“When someone acts like a waiter, the boss inevitably treats them as such—that exactly describes what happened to Giorgia Meloni. Her attempt to slightly distance herself from Donald Trump led him to assert who is in charge,” Scotto stated during the discussion. He also emphatically supported ending trade agreements with Israel.
“Economic sanctions often backfire,” Borghi responded. “Italy maintains a trade surplus with Israel, which means sanctions would effectively harm our own interests,” explained the Lega senator, an advocate of strong U.S. relations and Italy’s exit from the European Union.
