According to a message shared on X, the NBS initially raised alarm about a «potential threat» impacting airspace over the eastern Latvian areas of Ludza, Krāslava, Rēzekne, and Augšdaugava, subsequently verifying the presence of a UAV.

«Take refuge indoors, secure all windows and doors, adhering to the two-wall safety guideline,» the alert instructed. «If a low-flying, suspicious, or hazardous object is observed, avoid getting close and immediately dial 112. Updates will be provided once the danger has passed.»

The NBS confirmed the deployment of extra forces to the eastern border of Latvia to bolster air defense capabilities.

On Wednesday, Lithuania’s Vilnius airport paused operations following a government announcement of an alleged drone threat within its airspace.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defence reported the drone was approaching from Belarus and detected near the national boundary. NATO fighter jets were dispatched to identify the threat.

In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the situation, stating, «Russia’s overt threats toward our Baltic countries are entirely unacceptable.»

«Responsibility for drones jeopardizing the security and safety of people along our Eastern border lies squarely with Russia and Belarus,» she emphasized in a post on X.
