The announcement by US President Donald Trump to dispatch an extra 5,000 troops to Poland caught both Polish and US officials off guard.

Late Thursday evening, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly shared a message on his Truth Social account, declaring his intention to send an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland.

«Following the successful election of Poland’s current President, Karol Nawrocki, whom I proudly endorsed, and given our strong rapport, I am happy to announce that the United States will be deploying an additional 5,000 troops to Poland,» Trump stated.

Unexpected for authorities on both sides

The move seemed to surprise leaders in both Poland and the US, with reports suggesting that Trump did not seek consultation before making the decision.

The New York Times indicated that Pentagon officials were unaware of the announcement, noting that «the Department of Defense is directing inquiries to the White House.»

According to Politico, citing unnamed government sources from Warsaw and Washington, neither capital nor NATO members anticipated such a development.

Responses

Despite its surprise nature, the decision has been welcomed by officials in Poland and the US alike.

«This represents positive news for Poland and its Baltic allies. I appreciate the President’s reversal of the Secretary of Defense’s plan to withdraw the brigade from Poland. Poland demonstrates commitment and merits our close collaboration,» commented Republican Congressman Don Bacon on X.

Former US diplomat and Polish ambassador Daniel Fried shared a similar perspective.

«A beneficial correction by Trump and those who helped overturn the initial poor decision. This supports NATO’s security. Ideally, stationing or rotating US forces in Europe should rely on thorough plans, coordinated with NATO and SACEUR, rather than political considerations,» he noted, though he later raised questions about the origins of the extra troops.

«Resuming the postponed rotation might be one option. However, a politically motivated redeployment is also possible. Moving troops primarily to reward or sanction leaders based on favorability is not an effective defense strategy,» he added.

Nonetheless, the US administration has yet to reveal specific plans.

«There appears to be no formal process at the highest level for policy deliberation regarding troop movements,» stated Ian Kelly, a retired diplomat, according to the Associated Press.

«These decisions lack thorough planning,» Kelly said. «They seem impulsive, driven by Trump’s inclinations or what his advisors perceive his preferences to be.»

Rutte endorses the initiative

Speaking to the press in Sweden on Friday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the announcement and mentioned that «military commanders are currently evaluating all details.»

Karol Nawrocki, Poland’s right-wing president and the figure Trump cited as a factor in his decision following the 2025 election, expressed gratitude towards Trump for his «friendship» and committed to continuing to «protect the Polish-American alliance.»

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also commented on X, describing Trump’s announcement as «positive news» for both nations.

«I appreciate the efforts of President Nawrocki, ministers, congress members, and US supporters of Poland for their effective and unified action,» he stated.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the decision demonstrates «Poland’s role as a dependable and steadfast ally» to the US.

«It is encouraging that the two nations cooperate closely on critical security matters. Such commitment leads to tangible results,» he remarked.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński commented: «An additional 5,000 US troops will be stationed in Poland. This outcome reflects significant effort and a major achievement for all prioritizing Homeland security.»

Former prime minister and current opposition MP Mateusz Morawiecki also praised Nawrocki, writing that «the president has once again proven that the Poland-US relationship thrives on firm, consistent stances rather than trivial politics. Others might take note.»

Trump’s statement came shortly after US Vice President J.D. Vance informed the press that the scheduled deployment of American troops to the Eastern European country had been postponed.

The US has been reassessing its military footprint in Europe in recent months amid growing speculation that the Trump administration could reduce its forces on the continent.
