Budapest organiza un gran festival para conmemorar Europa en la nueva era gubernamental

Runners at the starting line on Europe Day 2026

In the near future, the EU’s notably contentious relationship with Hungary is expected to evolve, a prospect welcomed by many attendees at Europe Day.

One day following the convening of the new parliament and the swearing-in of Péter Magyar as prime minister, thousands gathered in Budapest to celebrate Europe Day alongside the 22nd anniversary of Hungary’s EU membership.

On 9 May 1950, marking the anniversary of the end of World War II, the Schuman Declaration was announced, setting the cornerstone for the entity now identified as the European Union. Seventy-six years later, on this very same date, Hungary appointed a new prime minister, an event likely to reshape the frequently strained dynamic between Brussels and Budapest. The governmental transition has also influenced this year’s Europe Day celebrations.

«We are all very happy. I haven’t attended Europe Day before, so I can’t compare, but there is definitely a positive atmosphere, especially following yesterday,» shared a young woman at Szabadság tér, the primary location for the festivities.

«Honestly, I’m quite pleased, sensing a more vibrant and driven spirit. Particularly because now there is an opportunity to pursue a common journey with Europe once again,» another participant expressed their thoughts on the change in government.

The organizers arranged a variety of activities for Europe Day, including concerts. Traditionally, the event kicked off with a running race: this year’s participants faced a half marathon, although those unwilling to run the full 21 kilometers could join relay teams.

The Europe Day program extends into the evening. The full schedule is available here (source in Hungarian), featuring the band hiperkarma as tonight’s headline act.
