El debate sobre migración: quién determina la pertenencia en Europa

MEPs Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D) and Tomas Tobé (EPP)

In this week’s edition of The Ring, MEPs Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D) and Tomas Tobé (EPP) engage in an in-depth discussion concerning Europe’s approach to migration — covering topics from the implementation of the “safe third country” principle to Spain’s expansive regularisation scheme.

Immigration has re-emerged as a focal point on Europe’s political scene, bringing some of the most complex challenges facing the European Union back into the spotlight.

Across both Brussels and member states’ capitals, legislators are weighing the possibility of applying the “safe third country” doctrine and establishing an EU-wide roster of safe countries of origin to streamline asylum processes.

Concurrently, Spain has advanced a large-scale regularisation initiative that offers legal status to thousands of migrants already residing and working within its borders—a move proponents believe will strengthen employment markets and support integration, while opponents caution that it could influence migration patterns throughout the Schengen zone.

This week on The Ring, Euronews’ weekly political debate series broadcast from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, two prominent parliamentarians present contrasting views.

Juan Fernando López Aguilar, a Spanish MEP representing the Socialists & Democrats and Chairperson of the Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE), insists that migration policy must strike a balance between regulatory control and adherence to international law as well as fundamental rights. Meanwhile, Tomas Tobé, a Swedish MEP and Vice-Chair of the centre-right European People’s Party, sitting on LIBE as well, emphasizes the importance of enhancing border management and the efficiency of deportations.

Their vigorous debate reveals a key dilemma within the EU’s migration discourse: how to reconcile firm regulation with humanitarian considerations, and whether national-level policies can be harmonized effectively with EU-wide frameworks.

As Europe confronts evolving proposals and changing political agendas, migration continues to transcend mere policy discussion. It challenges the Union’s definitions of community, responsibility, and collective destiny.
