On Friday, the Winter Olympics make their return to Europe. Due to rising temperatures, most Italian ski resorts now depend on artificial snow to preserve their white slopes. Despite this, the International Olympic Committee assures that the feelings will be authentic. So, who will emerge as the champion?

Initial figures reveal that Americans account for more than a third of international expenditures. The spending is substantial: Australians spend on average €2,600 per booking, while the Dutch invest over €1,300. Meanwhile, Italians appear to be staying home, likely because the ticket prices are relatively steep.

Perhaps watching from the comfort of home is simpler? These Olympics cover the largest area ever, spanning 22,000 square kilometres.

Therefore, those wanting to catch skiing events after the skating competitions should prepare for a drive that can last up to five hours.

Organizers assure that this edition of the games will be «green.» Previous Olympics also claimed to be environmentally friendly, such as the Sochi 2014 Winter Games in Russia.

However, Sochi ended with unlawful waste sites in protected areas and a final cost of €46.6 billion, inflated by corruption. Russia will not be represented this time, as it is banned due to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

What do the local inhabitants think? A recent survey indicated that most expect a «positive regional impact» and long-term enhancements in infrastructure and transport.

If this proves accurate, the true legacy will not just be the skiing, but a region ultimately connected for good.

It is to be hoped that during these Olympics, the only ICE encountered will be that on the mountains.
