«If strength is demonstrated, Russia will refrain from attacking» – MEPs Cristian Terheș (ECR) and Cynthia Ní Mhurchú (Renew Europe) debate European security on The Ring.
Above is the fifth episode of Euronews’ new debate program «The Ring,» aiming to bring the spirit of the European Parliament directly to viewers’ homes.
In this installment, broadcast from the European Parliament in Brussels, the discussion features liberal Irish MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú (Renew Europe) alongside conservative Romanian MEP Cristian Terheș (ECR). Despite their contrasting political views, both politicians found common ground regarding the EU’s role in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
Cristian Terheș highlighted the need for the EU to swiftly strengthen its defense systems and prepare for potential conflict: «If you show power, Russia will not attack you. Russia behaves like a bear—attacking only those who appear vulnerable.»
Responding to Terheș’s statement that regarding aid to Ukraine, «more should have been done, and earlier,» Ní Mhurchú defended the EU’s diplomatic strategy led by Kaja Kallas:
«I reject any criticism. Even if Kaja Kallas doesn’t appear prominently in photos, I rely on her and her team’s vigorous negotiations—they have remained steadfast and persistent.»
