El ministro de exteriores de España afirma que el ataque unilateral de EE.UU. e Israel contra Irán carece de respaldo legal internacional

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares states on Europe Today that the US and Israel’s military actions in Iran lack authorization under UN Treaties and international law, while also denouncing Iran’s response as «unwarranted.»

The «unilateral action» by the United States and Israel in Iran «is not supported by the United Nations Charter or international law,» Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares explained on Euronews’ main morning show Europe Today.

During a live broadcast Monday morning, Albares also criticized Iran’s counterattacks on multiple Middle Eastern countries as «unjustified,» calling for the European Union to serve as a «voice of reason» amid a rising tension.

«We have condemned every violation of human rights by the Iranian regime and stand with the people of Iran. Our aim is to safeguard them and their freedoms,» Albares declared.

He also noted that as the conflict extends into the broader region, Spain and the EU «must act as a voice of reason, promoting balance in the unfolding events, encouraging de-escalation and the return to diplomacy and negotiation.»

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez remains the sole EU leader to publicly denounce the US-Israeli strikes against Iran that took place Saturday, which have ignited further conflict in the area.

Sánchez’s administration has established itself as a prominent critic of US President Donald Trump’s interventionist foreign policy in Europe and a firm opponent of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

«Peace cannot be achieved through violence, nor can democracy or stability,» Albares affirmed on Monday. «Consequently, we will strongly support de-escalation and advocate for resuming talks.»

Nevertheless, Tehran has declared it will not return to negotiations with the US as the bombings continue into their third day.

Prior to Saturday’s intervention, Iran and the US were engaged in discussions in Geneva regarding the Iranian nuclear programme.

Albares also responded to remarks from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Euronews on Sunday accusing Spain of siding with the «tyrants of the world.»

«That claim is baseless and laughable. Spain maintains a coherent foreign policy,» Albares stated, underlining that Spain consistently applies its stance over international conflicts worldwide.

«Few countries can claim such coherence,» he added. «Our voice remains consistent globally, and we will continue this approach regardless of others’ approval.»
