Mercosur, India y la UE: desafíos políticos en las negociaciones comerciales del Ring

MEPs Ciaran Mullooly and Jörgen Warborn

In this week’s edition of The Ring, MEPs Warborn (EPP) and Mullooly (Renew Europe) engage in a vigorous discussion about the EU–Mercosur agreement, following the Parliament’s move to refer it to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

What advantages and disadvantages does the EU-Mercosur trade agreement present? What prompted the European Parliament to submit the agreement to the Court of Justice for further examination? What is behind the EU’s recent signing of the EU-India trade agreement, and what consequences will it have for the public?

These are some of the inquiries raised in the latest episode of The Ring — Euronews’ weekly debate program, filmed at the European Parliament studio in Brussels.

Irish MEP Ciaran Mullooly from Renew Europe and Swedish MEP Jörgen Warborn from the European People’s Party take part in a passionate exchange about their views on the deal finalized in Paraguay, after more than twenty years of negotiations.

Proponents argue that the agreement demonstrates the EU’s readiness to engage in global commerce and its capacity to make swift decisions amid geopolitical challenges. Jörgen Warborn stresses the importance of new trade agreements for economic expansion, market diversification, and strengthening international influence.

Opponents express apprehension regarding potential compromises in food safety standards and insufficient support for European farmers. Ciaran Mullooly voices concerns about the impact on farmers’ competitiveness, deterioration of environmental safeguards, and loss of public confidence.
