Podcast: Explicación clara de la relación entre la UE y EE. UU. en 2025

Brussels, My Love?

Brussels, My Love? revisits the significant events of 2025 in the Brussels–Washington dynamic.

As 2025 draws to a close, one of the foremost global stories has been the strained ties between the European Union (EU) and the United States (US).

Joined by Stefan Grobe, Euronews’ Brussels correspondent and expert on US affairs, Brussels, My Love? analyses the developments between the EU and the US over the past year while looking ahead to what 2026 might hold.

What unfolded in 2025?

The year began with Donald Trump commencing his second presidential term in the US. His government introduced major shifts on the global stage, notably reducing budgets for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and intensifying a trade conflict with China.

The EU also felt the strain of these economic disputes. To avoid further deterioration of the transatlantic alliance, Brussels reached an agreement with Washington during summer 2025, which many commentators regarded as disproportionately favorable to the US.

Grobe explains that the EU “had limited options” and engaged in talks, fully aware that Trump’s presidency was just beginning.

Nevertheless, Stefan Grobe notes that not all of Trump’s economic criticisms and policies were misplaced: “Trump highlighted some valid problems, such as China’s conduct in international markets and other countries, and action was necessary.”

Outlook for 2026?

Tensions between the US and EU increased further in early December, triggered by President Trump’s interview with Politico and the publication of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy for the US.

I can’t imagine a situation [US-EU relationship] deteriorating beyond the current state.

“Trump harbors strong hostility toward us; there is no other way to interpret it, he dislikes us intensely,” stated Grobe.

According to Grobe, this may present an opportunity for Europe “to determine its future course.”
