Convulsiva terapia de conversión LGBTQI+ calificada como ‘tortura’ por comisario de la UE en Euronews

The European Union must address the 'barbaric' and 'shameful' conversion therapies that harm LGBTQI+ communities in Europe, stated European Commissioner for Equality Hadja Lahbib in exclusive remarks to Euronews.

Hadja Lahbib, the EU’s equality commissioner, described conversion therapy to Euronews’ Europe Today programme as «a form of torture» that often results in depression and suicide – «which is why it is crucial to take action and fight against these practices.»

These statements followed the European Commission’s presentation of a citizens’ initiative, endorsed by over one million signatures, calling for a comprehensive ban across the bloc on the practice.

However, instead of fully meeting these demands, the Commission plans to introduce a non-binding recommendation next year. This will focus on actions such as raising societal awareness, supporting victims in pursuing legal remedies, and enhancing medical and psychological assistance.

When questioned about the Commission’s reluctance to take stronger measures, Lahbib acknowledged a lack of consensus among member states.

According to Article 19 of the EU treaties, tackling discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation requires unanimity among member states.

«The European Commission delivers an unequivocal message to each member state in this Union: implement a ban on conversion practices without delay,» Lahbib asserted.

«Member states bear the primary responsibility, as the competence largely rests with them,» she added, emphasizing the onus on national governments.

Currently, eight out of 27 member states – Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Malta, Spain, and Portugal – have enacted bans. These laws differ in specifics, including the levels of financial penalties and prison terms imposed.

«These countries have demonstrated that implementation is feasible,» Lahbib noted, commending the eight nations. «We aim to build on this progress by urging others to follow suit.»
