"Engaging with an unyielding, discredited mafia leader is futile," wrote Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar on Facebook this Saturday.
During a speech on Saturday, former PM and party head Viktor Orbán emphasized that Hungary’s Fidesz party must shift away from opposition tactics and initiate a new form of «resistance politics.»

At the Bálványos Summer University, Orbán, who lost power after sixteen years following the April elections, stated that dwelling on electoral defeat was no longer an option. Instead, the focus must turn to safeguarding Hungary’s freedom, which he asserted is currently at risk.
Orbán expressed his view that those who supported change in the Hungarian spring elections “did not cast their votes to have their confidence betrayed.”
He argued that most voters acted sincerely, anticipating fewer errors in governance and improved economic results.
The Fidesz leader further claimed that the ruling Tisza party seeks—and is beginning to construct—a fresh authoritarian regime. He compared this emerging system in Hungary to Venezuela, describing it as a combination of communist ideology, arbitrary political actions, and economic suppression.
He also suggested that attempts are underway to eradicate Fidesz entirely by removing its leaders from the political arena and employing illegitimate tactics to eliminate any realistic political opposition.
Therefore, instead of adopting an opposition approach rooted in introspection, Orbán declared that Fidesz must embrace a strategy of «resistance.»
In reaction, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that engaging with Orbán is pointless.
“Interacting with an unrelenting and disgraced mafia figure serves no purpose,” Magyar posted on Facebook.
“Gratitude for your wisdom and confidence, Hungary,” he added.
European Union
Orbán also addressed the European Union during his speech, asserting that «patriots» should take control of Brussels for member states to reclaim their sovereignty and rebalance power within the EU.
He proposed that the position of European Commission president, currently held by Ursula von der Leyen, ought to be abolished, alongside trimming the authority of the EU’s executive branch.
“Brussels must be taken over by the Patriots,” he concluded.
