In this week’s edition of The Ring, Euronews’ weekly debate programme, the focus is on Ireland, which recently assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, to explore the key issues preoccupying politicians.

Joining the discussion are Neale Richmond, Ireland’s Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, along with Sinn Féin MP TD Rose Conway-Walsh, who examine the principal challenges facing the nation and outline Ireland’s strategic priorities for steering the EU agenda over the next half year. The pair engage in a debate over what defines success for Ireland’s presidency. Topics range from defence policy and military neutrality to the investigation involving Aughinish Alumina, as they affirm that Ireland is prepared to tackle forthcoming challenges.

Richmond highlights that although Ireland constitutes only 0.9% of the European Union, it has consistently exerted influence beyond its size, referencing past presidencies that shaped major European policies.

Conway-Walsh insists the presidency should embody Ireland’s fundamental principles. «It represents a genuine chance to demonstrate the true values of the Irish people. Peace must be central to that, alongside equality,» she states.

However, they diverge on the issue of enhancing Europe’s defence capabilities. Richmond asserts there is «no pressure whatsoever for Ireland to join NATO» and advocates for strengthening security collaboration with European counterparts. Conversely, Conway-Walsh defends maintaining Ireland’s military neutrality, expressing concerns about what she terms the European Union’s «gradual militarisation.»
