Since record-keeping began in 1911, sixteen fatalities have occurred during the bull runs. The most recent death took place in 2009, when a 27-year-old Spaniard was fatally gored in the neck, heart, and lungs.

During the eighth and final bull run of Spain’s renowned San Fermín festival on Tuesday, ten men sustained injuries, bringing the total number of those hurt in this year’s event to 57.

An 18-year-old was wounded in the thigh by a bull’s gore, while another man, aged 46, suffered a chest injury. The remaining eight individuals were hospitalized with bruises ranging in severity, according to a statement from the Navarre regional government.

The bulls covered the 848.6-metre (928-yard) route from the holding pen to the city’s bullring in two minutes and 25 seconds.

Each morning across eight days, hundreds of thrill-seekers—mostly men—dressed in traditional white with red scarves tied around their necks, risked their safety running ahead of the bulls through the narrow, twisting streets of the medieval city.

In the afternoons, these bulls almost invariably face death in bullfights featuring Spain’s top matadors.

The San Fermín festival, internationally recognized after Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel «The Sun Also Rises,» attracts visitors from across the globe.

This year, four men were gored during the bull runs, including a 30-year-old Spaniard who was struck in the face by a horn.

Among the 57 injured, five are foreigners: two from the UK, one Australian, an American, and a German who was gored in the left arm.

Though the runs have concluded, the festival’s closing ceremony is scheduled for midnight.

Since 1911, the bull runs have claimed sixteen lives, with the most recent fatality occurring in 2009 when a 27-year-old man was fatally gored in the neck, heart, and lungs.
