Close to Piazza Navona in Rome, a couple from the US faced a charge of €44 for two ice creams eaten at the counter, provoking an online uproar over what many see as ‘tourist trap’ pricing.

This incident, shared on social networks by Nicole Ann from Florida, rapidly drew widespread attention, igniting a heated online discussion about pricing transparency and tourism in one of Rome’s most frequented districts.

Nicole described how she and her husband stopped at the «Don Nino» gelateria on Via di Tor Millina to buy two cups, each featuring three flavors. While their ice creams were being prepared, the staff reportedly added other items such as macarons and pistachio cannoli, without immediately clarifying these would incur extra charges. The surprise came at checkout.

«I believed they mentioned 14 euros,» Nicole wrote in a Rome travel tips Facebook group, clarifying that she only understood the full price after reviewing the receipt.

The posted receipt reveals that each of the two maxi-sized portions cost twelve euros. Additional charges for whipped cream, macarons, and pistachio cannoli raised the bill to 44 euros, even though the order was consumed at the counter without table service.

In her message, the tourist referred to the incident as a «tourist trap.» Despite numerous comments, she stated she does not plan to dispute the charge, admitting to a lack of vigilance regarding the prices before purchasing. She also noted that during her travels elsewhere in Italy, she had not encountered ice cream prices this steep.

The post quickly gained viral traction, garnering hundreds of reactions. Numerous users commented on the occurrence, which was widely shared online and reported by several digital news outlets.

Many expressed sympathy with the American couple, while others pointed out that in zones with a strong concentration of tourists, prices tend to be considerably higher than in other city areas.
