Far-right figures Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini are set to appear alongside Viktor Orbán at a campaign event in Budapest next Monday, merely three weeks prior to parliamentary elections that may represent the greatest threat to Orbán’s 16-year leadership tenure.

Called «the first Patriotic Grand Assembly,» the event occurs amid Fidesz, Orbán’s party, trailing behind the rival Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, in the majority of pre-election polls ahead of the 12 April voting.
The gathering will also include speeches by Le Pen, head of France’s National Rally, Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the far-right League, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, and Dutch politician Geert Wilders.
Within the European Parliament, many of these individuals belong to the far-right Patriots for Europe faction, which ranks as the assembly’s third-largest political group. Both Le Pen and Salvini have been staunch supporters of Orbán’s firm anti-immigration policies, reflecting his critical stance toward the European Union.
Ádám Kavecsánszki, chairman of the Foundation for a Civic Hungary—the event’s organizer—declared in a statement that “we demonstrate that Europe still counts leaders who uphold both Europe and its citizens.”
Trump’s Budapest trip remains unverified
In early January, US President Donald Trump hinted in a letter about plans to visit Budapest during Hungary’s electoral campaign. Trump regards Orbán as an important European ally and commended him as a “great leader” during the Hungarian prime minister’s visit to the White House last November.
“Your leadership serves as a model for others worldwide,” Trump wrote. “You have consistently championed the principles that fortify Hungary — faith, family, and national sovereignty — and America respects that resolve.”
So far, no official confirmation has been made regarding Trump’s visit. He also proposed hosting a US-Russia peace summit in Budapest aimed at negotiating a ceasefire in Ukraine, but the initiative failed because Russia declined participation.
According to Reuters, US Vice President JD Vance aims to visit Hungary within days to back Orbán’s electoral bid. The exact schedule remains unannounced and not officially disclosed.
Budapest will additionally be the venue for the CPAC Hungary conference this Saturday, an event popular among American and European right-wing figures. No senior US administration officials are confirmed as speakers.
This Saturday, Budapest hosts the European edition of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)—the foremost conservative meeting in the United States—although no high-ranking US government members have been announced to speak.
