The Belgian federal police conducted raids on several European Commission offices on Thursday amid an inquiry into alleged irregularities in property deals that took place in 2024.

On Thursday, the Belgian federal police carried out searches at multiple European Commission locations as part of an investigation focused on the 2024 sale of real estate assets to the Federal Participation and Investment Company, which serves as the Belgian government’s investment entity.

The inquiry centers on the acquisition of 23 Commission properties, which are reportedly valued at approximately €900 million.

This transaction occurred during the last term, when Johannes Hahn held the position of European Commissioner for budget and administration.

Euronews sought comments from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office; however, no response was received before the article was published.

A spokesperson for the European Commission addressed the investigation, affirming the institution’s willingness to cooperate fully with the competent authorities by «supplying any necessary information and support to guarantee a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into this issue».

«From the European Commission’s standpoint, the sale process adhered to the established regulations and protocols, and the Commission remains confident that all procedures were properly followed,» the spokesperson added.

Investigators are refraining from sharing additional information with the press to protect the integrity of the investigation.
